Dormitory Town

A cobbled street of silver
shimmering in the rain
Footnotes of a civic nature
Now an Orwellian refrain
Out of town Town Planners
Virtually moving in on paper
All the local people moving out in disgust
When this town had bit the dust
Mitchell Way the way we were
Where were we when we had to hit the streets

This place had structure a society, a purpose
Sprinkled with some fun.
This town once had quite a rhythm,
Had done and now it has none
Albert Street has faded gone
Oh Susannah never to return
Now we have a ring road
round a through road
Passing by a Dormitory Town
Mitchell Way the way we were
Where were we when we had to hit the streets

Bring back Bank Street banks
the tenants of the tenements
Bridge Street standing tall
Where they once met, an Institute
not remnants of a Bingo Hall.
It’s an easy place to get out of
Sleepwalking in this nightmare
One way on a single train track
And that vast stairway to nowhere
Look back in anger build our future back
Mitchell Way the way we were
Where were we when we had to hit the streets

CHORUS
Drive on bye, Drive on through (drive on through)
No work no play near home
No one stays around this place for very long (very long)
It's a transients Dormitory Town
Still, I can escape awake at night
Dreaming to that traffic sound
